44th US President 2009–  Born in Hawaii, he graduated from Columbia University, and became active in social work in Chicago. In 1991, he obtained a law degree from Harvard, where he had become the first African‐American President of the Harvard Law Review. Obama moved back to Chicago, where he was elected to the Illinois Senate as a Democrat in 1996. In 2004 the telegenic moderate became the first African American to be elected to the US Senate. The second African American after Jesse Jackson to launch a serious bid for the presidency, Obama collected more money in donations than any other candidate in the early months of the campaign. Obama campaigned on his opposition to the Iraq War, and his ability to overcome the polarization between Democrats and Republicans. He was selected as the Democratic candidate and convincingly defeated the Republican John McCain to become the first African‐American President.
